  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder (or more to taste)
For the frosting:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp chilli powder (or more to taste)

Equipment

  • Two 8-inch round cake pans
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Mixer

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease two 8-inch round cake pans. Line the bottom of each pan with parchment paper. 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. 3. Add the vegetable oil, vanilla extract, white vinegar, water, and chilli powder to the dry ingredients. Stir until well combined. 4. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. 5. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. 6. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. 7. Carefully remove the cakes from the pans and place them on a wire rack to cool completely. 8. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. 9. Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla extract, and chilli powder to the bowl. Beat until smooth and creamy. 10. Once the cakes have cooled completely, spread a generous amount of frosting on top of one of the cakes. 11. Place the second cake on top of the frosting and spread more frosting on top of the second cake. 12. Decorate the cake with extra chilli powder or chocolate shavings, if desired.

Notes

Make sure to let the cakes cool completely before frosting them. If the cakes are still warm, the frosting will melt and slide off.
